Yesterday I walked out my front door, and a redtailed hawk flew over me, and landed in a nearby tree. Today as I walked out from an appointment, two crows flew overhead, calling their mournful call.
At one point, I would have delighted to see birds,
but thought no more of it.
But then I started looking into Spirit Animals,
or totems, as they are sometimes called.
And, the idea really spoke to me...
that animals appear as signs
from Mother Nature,
parts of the web of life,
communicating messages of
guidance and wholeness.
Native American tradition has it that all people have one or two or even more, special totem animals, that serve as guides.
This is how I met my primary guide: I had a dream. And in this dream, I was handed my totem animal, which is a snake. It was a very powerful, vivid dream, and I woke up remembering it very clearly...and I walked out to my backyard...and two snakes crossed my path, just in front of me.
It felt very significant.
The first step to meeting your animal guide, is to pay close attention. Is there one animal that you meet over and over, or in unlikely ways? If so...what can this animal teach you?
Observation is a great teacher. Watch and learn. How does your animal interact with the world? What wisdom can it offer you?
Lately I am watching the birds. Birds fly lightly over things that would stop a human. Birds work with the cycles of the days...at dawn they arise, and at sunset, they nest. Birds SING. They are not afraid to use their voice.
We could learn a lot from the birds...
has this happened to you? do you have a specific totem you connect with, or do you notice animals often, and feel you'd like to understand more? please share...i'd love to hear from you. <3
